Morris Does Mexico
Andrew Bosworth, Ph.D. www.virtualcitizens.com 07/07/06
Dick Morris went all the way to Mexico to violate Article 33 of the Mexican
Constitution, which says: “Foreigners may not, in any manner, involve themselves in the political affairs of the country.”
But that is what Dick Morris did by immersing himself in the campaign as an “unofficial” advisor of Felipe Calderon - the right-wing darling of the international and banking community.
Morris showed Mexico’s conservatives how to dirty up a campaign, how to
smear and slander an opponent into defeat. His target? Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO), a center-left candidate for president. The Morris-Calderon campaign broadcast television commercials showing AMLO actually morphing into Hugo Chavez, and right-wing media printed countless magazines depicting AMLO as a pawn on a chessboard, with Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro hovering over him diabolically.
Morris himself echoed the idea that there was some kind of AMLO-Chavez-Castro troika-in-the-making: “Think we have security problems now, with Vicente Fox leading Mexico? Just wait until we have a 2,000-mile border with a chum of Chavez and Castro.” All of this apparently had its effect on Mexico’s campaign. Felipe Calderon was in the doldrums before the injection of American-style smear campaigns.
Your faithful author lived in Mexico City for three years under the
government of the demonized Andres Manuel. He was simply an uncharismatic but well-meaning “filler of potholes.” He was famous for living in a tiny apartment, driving a tiny car, and giving 6 a.m. press conferences to bleary-eyed reporters. His only personal scandal stemmed from expropriating land to build a public road to a public hospital. Unfortunately for AMLO, the land owner was friends with a judge, and AMLO was indicted. The charges against AMLO were dropped after more than 1,000,000 Mexicans took to the streets in Mexico City.
Is AMLO a threat? Well, he thinks Mexico should have a better social
security system, and he thinks that the petroleum company, PEMEX, should NOT serve as an ATM machine for elites and union bosses.
AMLO is nothing like Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, who occupies a position on the far left of the political spectrum. Besides, Mexico already had a
revolution that emasculated the military, the Church, and the large plantation owners.
In Mexico there is a saying: “Poor Mexico, so far from God and so close to the United States.” You can say that again. Now, Mexico is cursed by a man with no loyalties. Consider Dick Morris’ personal betrayal of the Clintons.
It’s not as if Dick Morris were unemployed. He was a hired bullhorn for Fox News. Now, after his interference in Mexico’s election, Morris has provided Andres Manuel a potential case to contest the outcome of the election.
Dick Morris once resigned from the Clinton campaign after being busted with a prostitute. Now, South of the Border, people are wondering if political consulting is actually the world’s oldest profession.
