Texas Protest Unites Christians, Muslims, Jews
Andrew Bosworth, Ph.D. www.virtualcitizens.com 08/06/06

The people of McAllen, Texas, had something to stare at last Friday. An odd assortment of protesters turned out in unison.
At Friday’s peace rally were many Muslim men and women (with headscarves), from all over the Middle East, Hispanics from the Texas-Mexico border, and Anglo protesters fed up with the Bush-Blair-Olmert-Fox News propaganda machine.
At the head of the column, and hoisting a large American flag, was Dr. Samuel Freeman, a Vietnam veteran and a Jewish-American who believes, sensibly, that Israel proper is undermined by its use of excessive force and its steady expansion of illegal settlements on the West Bank.
Hundreds of drivers in McAllen honked and waved to show their support. Only three made rude gestures. McAllen’s overwhelming support for the peace demonstration is partly due to the painful truth: America’s occupation of Iraq has only produced civil war and is an utter failure; and the Bush regime’s unconditional support of the Israeli super-offensive can only create the conditions for World War III (of course, that’s the point).
“Every day that Bush remains in power,” insisted one of the protesters “yields more and more recruits for extremists.”
“Bush is an inadvertent recruiter of terrorists,” claimed another.
The Muslim protesters, like Dr. Amin Ibrahim, follow the peaceful message of the Koran and renounce violence against civilians. They sharply criticize the violence coming from radical Islamic groups.
Most of the Muslim adults in attendance held graduate degrees from western universities. They analyze world politics with a degree of accuracy not found in Washington, whose government has been hijacked by ideological neo-cons, the Cheney mafia, and lobbyists from the six countries that discovered that US foreign policy is for sale - all while neo-fascist pundits in the media applaud the transition from republic to tyranny.
Americans, Hispanics and foreign nationals still believing in the real “American dream” will continue protesting in South Texas.
