ABOUT JOHN CALVIN JONES
John was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Southern California – with a short stint in Connecticut (nearby New York City). He graduated from high school in Northern Virginia, within sight of the Washington Monument.
After graduating with a B.S. in Education from West Chester University in Pennsylvania, John went to
the University of Florida earning a Master’s degree in Latin American
Studies. In the summer of 1994, John was accepted to the University of Iowa in the department of
political science. Taking a detour to earn a law degree at Iowa, John
completed his PhD in Political Science in the spring of 2003.
In his travels outside the 48, John has traveled to Mexico, Guam, Guatemala, Belize, the Netherlands, Italy, Aruba and Puerto Rico. In addition to what is noted above, within the U.S. (in no particular order), John has visited, lived or worked in Seattle, Chicago, Miami, North and South Carolina, New Orleans (pre-Katrina), Cedar Rapids, South Texas, Houston, Minneapolis, Tampa, San Diego, San Francisco, Montana, and ski slopes in Colorado.
For political, environmental, and social reasons, John supports organic farming and vegetarianism. Most of his writings touch upon topics of social justice from the drug war to the war on terror, the general project of mis-education, illiteracy and innumeracy in the United States, and challenging conventional (i.e. corporate-capitalist) wisdom. Much of his knowledge about public health, personal health (e.g. Gulf War illness, toxicity of fluoride and many vaccines) and American political and economic history has been acquired after his formal training (i.e. coursework) in graduate school. This education comes from Any Goodman, Michael Parenti, Dennis Bernstein, Sonali Kohatkar, Deepa Fernandes, Mumia Abu Jamal, John Pilger, Nancy Fitzmorris, Howard Zinn, Greg Palast, Noam Chomsky, Joyce Riley, Kalleen Ragan-Pepper and countless others through lectures, interviews, films and articles.
John listens to Pacifica radio and reads alternative media daily. Part of his motivation to work with Virtual Citizens is to show solidarity with those who seek to re-educate America and her citizens as a means to promote justice, peace, and equality … especially for Julian Biko and Kaija-Siddharthi Siouxsie Xitlali.
